A new management contract awarded for the operation of the Cape Girardeau License Office is expected to prompt it to move from downtown to the Town Plaza.
The office, which issues driver's licenses and motor vehicle registrations for the Missouri Department of Revenue, will relocate to 51 S. Plaza Way, according to a news release from the department.
No specifics on the move were provided, and local employees of the office said they were unable to give details Wednesday, pending notification from the state.
The license office has been downtown for many years -- most recently inside a building at 112 S. Spanish St. It moved there from Main Street in 1994, according to Southeast Missourian archives.
A Jackson company, MCLB Management Company LLC, was awarded the contract through a competitive-bid process, according to the release. Other recent contract award releases show the company also manages license offices in the Missouri cities of Charleston, Farmington and Perryville.
Under the contracts, the state gets a percentage of processing fees from local licensing offices, which are operated by independent agents but overseen by the revenue department. Contracts are awarded for one year with three one-year renewal options, according to a previous release from the revenue department that announced it was seeking bids.
51 S. Plaza Way is on the Independence Street side of Town Plaza Shopping Center.
