The city of Cape Girardeau announced its five Employees of the Year for 1996.

The recipients are Brock Davis, Brad Dillow, Tracy Lemonds, Mary Thatch and Stephen Williams.

"These five individuals exemplify the hard work and dedication possessed by all of our city employees," said City Manager Michael Miller.

Dillow has been a city firefighter for over a year. In May 1996 he helped rescue a jumper from the Mississippi River bridge.

"Though Brad was a relatively new employee at the time, we had no doubts he could do the job," Assistant Fire Chief Max Jauch said. "Brad is a quick learner and very dedicated to his profession."

Lemonds, a police lieutenant and patrol division supervisor, has worked with the department for 20 years.

"Tracy is a top caliber employee of the Cape Girardeau Police Department," Police Chief Rick Hetzel said. "The fact that Tracy was nominated and selected by the rank-and-file of the police department is indicative of his outstanding character, dedication and professional abilities."

Davis is a three-year city employee. He is a recreation coordinator in the parks and recreation sports complex division, which includes organization of softball leagues and supervision of maintenance staff and projects for the Arena and Shawnee Park facilities.

"Brock is a very dedicated, hardworking employee and a great asset to our department and the city of Cape Girardeau," said Parks and Recreation Department director Dan Muser.

Thatch is a customer service representative for the Public Works Department, where she has worked for six years. "She is highly dedicated to her work and is a take-charge person," said Public Works director Doug Leslie.

Williams has worked in the city planning division since 1987. He is responsible for the housing rehabilitation and housing condemnation program. "Steve has been a special asset to the staff and community," said city planner Kent Bratton.
