A report of a dangerous hand grenade at a residence turned out to be false, Cape Girardeau police said.
The police had received a tip from law enforcement officers in Bonn Terre that hand grenades had been purchased there and transported back to Cape Girardeau, said Sgt. Carl Kinnison.
Police investigated the report at 1735 Brucher, where they discovered what appeared to be a hand grenade, Kinnison said.
After receiving assistance from federal Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents, the hand grenade was taken to a gravel pit south of Cape Girardeau, where it was detonated. It turned out to be a fake, Kinnision said.
"It simply made a lot of noise," he said. "There were no fragments or any danger of injury."
