A woman remained in stable condition Thursday night after falling for an unknown reason from a second-story apartment balcony.

The woman, Clarissa Melrose, was taken to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, where a spokeswoman said she was stable.

Cape Girardeau police said they are investigating the incident. They reported the incident occurred Thursday afternoon at 724 Themis.

Police said the woman was alone when she fell. A friend had just left and was walking down steps at the place, but didn't see her fall, police said.

How the woman fell was unknown, police said. Police said she was either unconscious or for some other reason unable to speak to an officer at the scene.

The extent of the woman's injury or injuries was also unavailable from police.
