Cape Girardeau residents should expect an increase in their utility rates starting July 1. Sewer rates are set to increase an average of $20 per month. The increase to fund a new wastewater treatment facility set for completion in 2014 was approved by voters April 5. In addition, an annual sewer usage adjustment is set for July. The adjustment will be based on residents' most recent winter usage. Water rates will also be adjusted to keep pace with rising costs, and will amount to 5 percent of customers' meter and usage charge. A new monthly fuel surcharge of about 42 cents will also be added to cover occasional spikes in fuel costs. Customers can expect a total increase of about $21 and should see a new surcharge on their City of Cape Girardeau bills that combine water, sewer and trash.
