The National Weather Service confirmed Wednesday the high temperature of 70 degrees in Cape Girardeau on Tuesday was the lowest high recorded for June 2, at least since 1984.
Dave Purdy, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Paducah, Ky., said an unusual low-pressure system in the area Tuesday was responsible for the low temperature.
"It's not the kind of record most people think about, but we noticed it," he said.
Purdy said the temperature was recorded at the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport through the use of the Automated Surface Observation System, which has records that date to 1984.
The previous lowest-high mark for July 2 was 78 degrees in 1989, and the highest temperature recorded was 101 degrees in 2012.
