Throughout December the library will collect canned and dried food in lieu of fines. The food value will be 50 cents per item. Food may not be used to pay for replacement of lost items or any other library fees. Food will be donated to FISH food pantry for local families.

Other upcoming events are:

* At 2 p.m. Sunday, a Kwanzaa program will be presented by Ivy Locke. Registration is required. Call 335-5279 or go online at www.capelibrary.com.

* At 7 p.m. Tuesday, Christmas crafts will be made. Registration required.

* From 7 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 12, a library awareness workshop for parents, teachers, support staff and individuals with disabilities will be presented. Information about services available for those with disabilities, special programs offered by the library, how to ask for assistance and how to apply for your own library card will be available. Bring a picture ID if applying for a library card. Registration required by Dec. 8. Workshop made available through a library services grant.

* From 2 to 4 p.m. Dec. 14, the final selection for Great Books 2005, "The Known World" by Edward P. Jones, will be featured in the Hirsch Community Room. Books may be obtained by local booksellers. Call the library or the Center for Regional History at 651-2555 for more information.

* At 7 p.m. Dec. 15, the knitting club will meet in the Hirsch Community Room. Knitters of all ages and skill levels encouraged to attend. Bring needles and yarn.

* Library closings include Dec. 24 to 26 and Jan. 1 and 2.
