Cape Girardeau pseudoephedrine prescription rule takes effect today
Pharmacists at all stores in Cape Girardeau will begin asking consumers today for a doctor's prescription if they try to buy sinus medications containing pseudoephedrine or ephedrine.

Pharmacists at all stores in Cape Girardeau will begin asking consumers today for a doctor's prescription if they try to buy sinus medications containing pseudoephedrine or ephedrine.
The Cape Girardeau City Council passed an ordinance Dec. 6 requiring a doctor's note in order to buy products like Advil Cold & Sinus and Sudafed. Pseudoephedrine, which clears nasal passages to help a sinus infection, is also a key component in manufacturing methamphetamine.

Cape Girardeau city manager Scott Meyer said staff is contacting all pharmacies in the area to remind them of the ordinance going into effect.
Similar regulations were passed in Jackson, Scott City, Dexter, Poplar Bluff and Sikeston.
Punishment for violating the ordinance cannot exceed a $500 fine, three months in jail or a combination of the two.
