Cape Girardeau police remove racist sign from park

Cape Girardeau police removed a white KKK sign from a city soccer park Tuesday morning after a motorist spotted the racist sign.

The 10-foot-tall letters, created out of toilet paper, were laid out on a field at Shawnee Park. The letters were visible to motorists on nearby West End Boulevard, said police Sgt. Barry Hovis.

A motorist notified police of the sign before 7:30 a.m. An officer went to the scene and removed the toilet paper, collecting it as evidence.

The vandal or vandals used rocks to hold the multiple layers of toilet paper in place, Hovis said. It appears the sign was created Monday night, police said.

As of late Tuesday afternoon, police had no witnesses to the crime.

Hovis said the sign violated the city's littering law.

But more importantly to police, the sign suggests someone supports the Ku Klux Klan white supremacy group, Hovis said.

"That type of activity is unwanted in our community," he said.
