The Cape Girardeau Police Department is investigating an early Sunday morning assault downtown.
According to department spokesman Darin Hickey, three women were walking on Water Street at about 1 a.m. when they were approached by two other women about an earlier confrontation. An argument started and one of the women walking on Water Street reported that the two women who approached them began to assault her. The two other victims attempted to break up the fight when two men approached and also began assaulting the victims, Hickey said.
Hickey said that when officers arrived, the suspects disappeared into a group of people that had gathered during the fight. Both male suspects were said to have had firearms in their hands while the assault took place but the weapons were not fired. Two of the female victims had lacerations on their faces and were treated at a hospital and released. Anyone with information about the suspects are urged to contact the police department at 335-6621.
