A 24-year-old man was shot early Thursday in a Cape Girardeau apartment complex, and one person was in custody for the attack.
The shooting occurred around 3:15 a.m. at the apartment complex, 312 W. Lorimier St., according to police spokesman Jason Selzer.
The victim, a Cape Girardeau resident, was found by police at the bottom of a flight of steps in the building with a gunshot wound to his upper left arm.
He was treated for a "soft tissue wound" at a local hospital and released, Selzer said.
A man suspected of shooting the victim was in police custody Thursday night. Earlier in the day, the accused gunman visited his probation and parole officer, who knew police sought him in the shooting, according to Selzer.
The suspect was brought to the police department for questioning and was being held on a warrant for a probation and parole violation, he said. No charges related to the shooting had been filed.
According to the victim, he was walking down the stairs near the apartment building's exit moments before the shooting, Selzer said. When he was near the bottom of the stairs, someone behind the victim said, "Hey, what are you doing?" When the victim turned around, he saw a man standing up the steps.
As many as three shots were fired from a handgun, Selzer said. The weapon has not been recovered, but police found one shell casing at the scene.
No motive had been established as of Thursday night, Selzer said.
