A Cape Girardeau man was charged with a felony for allegedly damaging the Cape Girardeau city jail early Friday morning.

According to Darin Hickey, spokesman for the Cape Girardeau Police Department, Travis Shavers, 27, was on a 24-hour hold at the jail for another pending case when he became very angry.

Shavers, who was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol, flipped a large piece of electronic equipment off a table while he was handcuffed to the wall. It caused a computer monitor and telephone to also be knocked off the table, Hickey said.

Shavers was transported to the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department where he was being held Friday afternoon on a $7,500 cash or surety bond.
