Police arrested a Cape Girardeau man Thursday evening after he attempted to flee from police in his vehicle and on foot, a public information officer said.
The man's name was not released Thursday night, pending filing of formal charges.
About 6:35 p.m. Thursday, a Cape Girardeau police officer attempted to stop the man for a traffic violation in the 500 block of Henderson Avenue, officer Darin Hickey said.
The man attempted to flee in his vehicle but made it only as far as the 900 block of Jefferson Avenue, where he struck a parked vehicle, causing minor damage, Hickey said.
The suspect left the vehicle and ran from police, who apprehended him a short time later, Hickey said.
About 6:40 p.m., officers surrounded a residence at 420 S. Benton St., where they removed a man, handcuffed him and led him away.
Dozens of onlookers gathered in the street, but multiple bystanders said they did not know who the man was or why he was being arrested.
After police left the scene, an obviously agitated woman standing near the house approached a reporter, shouting incoherently, but she declined to comment on the situation.
Hickey said formal charges are expected today.
