Cape Girardeau man arrested after 70 mph chase through residential area

A Cape Girardeau man is in jail after police say he drove approximately 70 miles per hour in a 30-mile-per-hour zone while evading police, eventually crashing into a residence Sunday, June 30.

Aubrey Carter II, was charged on counts of resisting detention or stop by fleeing and operating a vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner involving an accident.

A police officer observed Carter’s vehicle, a 2013 white Dodge Durango, traveling north on Spanish Street at a high rate of speed Sunday near Grassroots BMW, according to a probable-cause statement signed by an officer whose name is redacted.

The officer stated Carter turned on Bellevue and accelerated to approximately 70 miles per hour in the residential area. The officer activated his lights, but Carter continued driving at a high rate of speed and ignoring stop signs, according to the report.

Eventually, Carter’s vehicle struck a curb on Bellevue, the report states, adding he lost control of the SUV and crashed into a residence. Carter ran from the vehicle and attempted to hide at the Cape Transit Authority on Broadway.

Judge Frank Miller issued a $50,000 bond. The resisting arrest charge is a Class E felony; the careless and imprudent charge is a Class A misdemeanor.
