A Cape Girardeau man faces felony charges of stealing after Dollar General Store surveillance camera footage allegedly showed him taking the store's Toys for Tots money donation box. Sylvester E. Smith Sr., 58, 618 North St., No. 301, was arrested Nov. 14, said Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney Morley Swingle. According to a probable-cause statement, the store manager, Nicole Parks, noticed the box was missing while checking out a customer. She checked the surveillance footage and reported the incident to police. According to the statement, Smith was arrested the next day when he came back to the store at 724 Broadway. Because he has several prior stealing convictions, he faces a felony charge, which carries a sentence of up to four years in prison.
