Cape Girardeau County commissioners voted Thursday to forward the 2010 surplus from the land tax sale to the county treasurer. The surplus was $7,895.09, and Treasurer Roger Hudson said the money will be put into the school fund for three years before being released to the schools. During that time the owners have the right to claim any surplus.

During that time the owners have the right to claim any surplus.

Also at Thursday's meeting, commissioners approved a request from Randy Rhodes, chief juvenile officer, to purchase a 2009 Ford Econoline Wagon XLT with running boards from Morlan Dodge in Sikeston, Mo., for $19,268. The county did receive one bid lower than Morlan's, but it was for an older vehicle with more mileage.

In other business

  • Commissioners approved a motion reimbursing Sheila Irvin, judicial court reporter, for the purchase of recording equipment.
  • County employees will not be required to attend meetings about the county's 2010 United Way campaign. Handouts and information will be distributed to office holders and department heads to be disseminated throughout their staff.
  • Pete Frazier, outreach coordinator for the United Way's 211 program, gave a presentation to commissioners about the services available through the program. The 211 program is similar to First Call for Help, but specializes in post-disaster needs. He asked the commission to help disseminate 211 posters and brochures through county offices.

Koeper reported that a county construction vehicle was involved in a minor accident Wednesday. Koeper said a trailer carrying an excavator suffered a tire blowout while turning a corner near county roads 361 and 365, causing the excavator to shift and come off of the trailer. Koeper said no one was injured during the incident and damages are unspecified at this time.

  • Commissioners decided to defer a decision regarding the purchase of two hand-held radios until Thursday. There were questions regarding the total amount needed for the purchase. The request was made by the county's emergency management director, and he was at a meeting and unavailable to address commissioners' concerns.
