Cape Girardeau County Commission discusses $5.9 million sales tax
The Cape Girardeau County Commission on Monday directed county highway administrator Scott Bechtold to prepare a list of paving projects that would be completed during the first five years following approval of a proposed county sales tax increase.
The lists will show what could be accomplished with current tax revenues and what could be done if the extra money from the tax hike becomes available.
The commissioner also set a June 19 public hearing for response from county residents on the proposed lists. The sales tax, which would raise about $5.9 million annually, is on the Aug. 8 ballot and, in addition to roads, would fund expansion of the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department patrol force and replace property taxes currently in force to fund road work.
