Cape Girardeau County Commission appoints five to enterprise zone board

The Cape Girardeau County Commission on Thursday appointed five members to the seven-member enhanced enterprise zone board.

Commissioner Paul Koeper recommended Mike Jennewein, John Thompson and Danny Essner be appointed to the board as the county's representatives. Jennewein is retired from Procter & Gamble; Thompson is the president of the Bank of Missouri; Essner is the executive vice president of Capaha Bank.

Jackson Mayor Barbara Lohr was approved as Jackson's representative and council member John Voss was approved to represent Cape Girardeau.

The remaining two vacancies will be filled with a representative from the zone's education community and a representative from the county's taxing entities. Mitch Robinson, executive director of Cape Girardeau Area Magnet, said he plans to have those recommendations by the Nov. 29 meeting.

The county commission will not meet Monday because of the Missouri Association of Counties annual conference. The office will be closed Thursday for Thanksgiving.

Other action

In other business, the commission:

• Voted to lift the burn restriction order for the county.
• Passed a motion to submit a letter to Gov. Jay Nixon urging him to not cut the prisoner per diem.
• Appointed Dennis Marchi to fill Virgil Churnside's seat on the Industrial Development Authority.
• Passed a motion to retire the existing building and grounds van and replace it with the juvenile department's van.
• Appointed incoming presiding commissioner Clint Tracy to the seat being vacated by Koeper on the Magnet board.
• Approved Mike Jennewein to serve the final year of his four-year term on the Magnet board.
• Granted the prosecuting attorney's request to hire Frank E. Miller as an assistant prosecutor. He will replace Michael Mueth.
• Granted approval to Scott Bechtold, highway administrator, to purchase two mowers and two tractors for the highway department. The purchase will not exceed $140,500. Delivery will be in the spring.
