Cape Girardeau firefighters responded to a house fire at 802 William St. shortly before noon Wednesday.
The fire was reported by the residents of the single-family home when the structure began filling with smoke, Cape Girardeau fire chief Rick Ennis said at the scene. Firefighters found a blaze in the basement of the home and quickly extinguished it, he said.
Shortly after noon, firefighters were working to clear the house of smoke and check whether fire had spread into the walls of the home from the basement, Ennis said.
Firetrucks and other emergency vehicles blocked William Street near Ellis Street while they worked at the scene.
The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, Ennis said. No one was injured.
