JACKSON - Cape Girardeau County's sales tax receipts after seven months of 1991 are running about $14,000 ahead of the same time a year ago.

That nominal increase is just over a half percent ahead of last year and still well below the 5-7 percent growth county officials say they would like to see.

"We're just taking it one month at a time and hoping for the best," declared Presiding Commissioner Gene Huckstep.

Overall for the first seven months of this year, total receipts have been $1,793,413.63.

The sales tax check received this week was for $270,928.99, which is nearly 10 percent more than the $246,567 received in July of 1990. The 1989 check was only a few dollars higher than the one for 1990.

Cape County has a half cent sales tax which is collected by the Missouri Department of Revenue and distributed on a monthly basis.

In 1990, the county collected just over $3 million in sales tax.
