One accidental death from smoke inhalation inside an apartment at 224 S. Lorimier St. in Cape Girardeau has been confirmed by county Coroner John Clifton. Clifton said smoking may have contributed to the death of the apartment's resident, whose name will be released today pending notification of family members.
Cape Girardeau battalion chief Fred Vincel and one fire engine responded to a call at about 10:50 a.m. Sunday.
Vincel said the fire had burned out by the time the call was made by an individual who often looked in on the resident.
An investigation found no smoke detectors inside the apartment. Vincel said there was heat and smoke damage throughout the apartment.
