The Cape Girardeau County Commission will look at implementing new county speed limits at its meeting today following a lengthy discussion on the subject Thursday.
Some residents have expressed concern about their roads and subdivisions in which speeders are prominent.
The county doesn't have jurisdiction over any of the roads in the city limits, but county roads are up for consideration.
Presiding Commissioner Gerald Jones said this is not intended to set up speed traps. But if the commission decides to go further Jones said, "we need to have some public hearings, other than in this chamber."
If new speed limits are implemented, signs would need to be set up at the beginning and end of the speed limits zone. District 1 Commissioner Paul Koeper was asked to have a rough estimate of the costs at today's meeting.
Also at today's meeting, the University of Missouri Extension Council members will take their oath of office. The county outreach and extension council, made up of elected and appointed members, is a full partner with Missouri's land-grant universities. The council members work with extension specialists to provide the county educational program.
