Cape County Commission to discuss speed limit public hearings Thursday

Cape Girardeau County commissioners plan to discuss setting public hearing dates for a proposed ordinance that would create new speed limits on some county roads at their regular meeting today.

At Monday's meeting commissioners approved a motion to hold public hearings after Commissioner Paul Koeper shared a recommendation from the Cape Special Road District's commission to pursue an ordinance that would reduce speed limits on county-maintained roads in the district from 60 mph to 35 and 25 mph.

The county is required to seek input through three public hearings before commissioners can vote on an ordinance.

Koeper and the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department say the speed limit needs to be reduced to increase safety for drivers and residents who live in the district and that the ordinance is not being looked at as a way to raise money for the county through issuing more speeding tickets.

The commission meets at 9 a.m. today at the county administration building in Jackson.
