The Cape Girardeau County Commission on Thursday verified bids from three paving companies for highway and parks department projects
Pace Construction Co. of St. Louis and Apex Paving Co. of Cape Girardeau submitted bids to lay "plant mix bituminous" or "blacktop" paving on county roads 233, 436, 411 and possibly 325, depending on project costs. Also included were patching projects for roads throughout the county.
The county requested bids that compared the cost of using contractors for every phase of the highway projects to partially using county workers. Scott Bechtold, county highway administrator, said the county was considering using its own workers when possible to "be able to do more work with the funds we have."
Pace, Apex and Jokerst Inc. of St. Genevieve, Mo. also bid on repaving the roads in North County Park. All paving bids were referred to the highway department for review.
The sole bid for a used Chevy Tahoe or Ford Explorer for the juvenile department was declined because it was "the wrong size and would not accommodate their needs," according to a memo to the commission from County Clerk Kara Clark Summers. The bid process will be started over, possibly with revised specifications.
