The Cape Girardeau County Commission and the local Republican Partys central committee are preparing to act to replace Cape Girardeau County Sheriff John Jordan, who has announced he will resign Monday.
The commission announced Tuesday anyone interested in serving as interim sheriff must submit an application by 4:30 p.m. Friday. An application may be requested by emailing the commission at commish@capecounty.us or by calling (573) 204-2494.
The interim sheriff will serve until a sheriff is elected in a special election in November, county officials said.
Meanwhile, the GOP central committee is reaching out to those who may be interested in being nominated as the partys candidate for the special election to fill Jordans unexpired term.
Scott R. Clark, committee chairman, said in a news release any Republican interested in running for sheriff should send a letter of interest and contact information to capecogop@gmail.com.
The Republican Central Committee is responsible for selecting their nominee, he said. Once county commissioners officially set the election, a time line will be released regarding the nominating process, Clark said.
The winner of the special election will serve as sheriff until the unexpired term ends in 2020.
