Cape County Commission awards one project, accept bids for two others

The Cape Girardeau County Commission on Thursday selected a company to repave the roads in Cape County Park North and accepted bids for two other county projects.

Pace Construction Co. of St. Louis was awarded the parks project for its bid of $89,812.50.

Bids were accepted for replacing the roof on the Common Pleas Courthouse, annex and juvenile assessment center. Two versions of the project were advertised. The first included reroofing the courthouse and juvenile assessment center with shingles and the annex with rubber. The second version excluded the annex roof. Boulder Construction LLC of Cape Girardeau bid $176,665 for version one and $107,886 for version two. Drury Co. of Cape Girardeau bid $169,364 and $118,600. Bids were referred to the building and grounds department for review.

Six companies bid to grade County Road 506: Eagle Excavating & Trucking LLC of Jackson bid $133,714, Kinder Brothers Excavating of Dexter, Mo., bid $216,180, Elmer Buchheit Construction of Friedheim, Mo., bid $135,820, Tom Beussink Excavating Inc. of Jackson bid $127,210, Jokerst Inc. of St. Genevieve, Mo., bid $155,140 and Zoellner Construction Co. of Perryville, Mo., bid $301,917. All bids were referred to the highway department for review.

Associate Commissioner Paul Koeper reported that the paving project for County Road 401 was completed and went $307 over budget. The total cost was $137,052.

Disc golf course

Associate Commissioner Jay Purcell presented an update on the disc golf course under development at Cape County Park North. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 3:30 p.m. June 1 for the first phase of the 18-hole professional-level course. Twelve holes will be open for play until the final six, which will extend into the wooded area of the park, are complete. Similar to traditional golf, disc golf players throw hard rubber discs from "tees" to metal baskets, or "holes." The player with the fewest number of throws at the end of the course wins.

The commission passed a motion approving the sponsorship program that is funding the course. Community members can sponsor at three levels. For a donation of $50 the park will install a permanent, engraved 4-by-8-inch pave stone at the tee-box of the sponsor's choice. A larger, 8-by-8-inch stone can be installed for $150 and engraved granite tee-box markers with a logo are available for $1,000.

Other business

Mary Gosche of the University of Missouri Extension office presented a quarterly report on the office's activities, which include providing safety and fall prevention programs for seniors, sewing and donating weighted blankets that help soothe children with autism and educational programs and support groups for parents and for grandparents who are primary caretakers of their grandchildren. The office is completing the first year of the "Eating From the Garden Program," which involved more than 80 fourth-grade students in growing and harvesting food, in association with Missouri Master Gardeners.

The commission appointed Larry Cunningham to the Board of Equalization to replace William Craig, who died in January. Cunningham is the Jackson city alderman for Ward 3 and former owner of Cunningham Appraisal of Jackson.

The commission passed a motion requiring all county employees who drive county vehicles or regularly use their own vehicles for county business to attend a defensive driving class on June 6, in the interest of employee and community safety.
