A breakdown of equipment in the air conditioning system in the Cape Girardeau County Jail prompted county commissioners on Thursday to approve a motion to purchase replacement equipment, citing an emergency situation.

According to Commissioner Paul Koeper, one of four compressors in the system went down Wednesday. Koeper said if another compressor were to stop working over the weekend, there was a good possibility some prisoners would need to be moved because the forecast was calling for temperatures in the 90s.

Commissioners approved an amount not to exceed $8,500 for Premium Mechanical and Automation Inc. to expedite service and replace equipment.
