The Cape Girardeau City Council has set a public hearing for May 7 regarding a request by Birthright Inc. for a special-use permit.
The organization wants to operate its center at 404 N. Louisiana Ave. in a two-family residential area.
The neighboring property owners voiced their opposition last week during a Planning and Zoning Commission meeting.
Thomas Meyer, representing the Birthright agency, asked the council to set a public hearing.
The Planning and Zoning Commission had considered the increased traffic that the Birthright center could bring to the neighborhood and any adverse effects it might have on the neighborhood when making its recommendation. The commission voted 3-5, with one abstention, to deny the matter.
Neighboring property owners also filed a petition asking that the special-use permit be denied.
