The city of Cape Girardeau has hired its new prosecutor.
John Treu, 26, took over the position, assistant city attorney, Monday. Treu fills a vacancy left by Allen Moss Jr., who left in April to become the assistant attorney general in Jackson.
Treu is a native of Topeka, Kan., said City Attorney Warren Wells. However, Treu said he grew up in the Jefferson City area.
Prior to assuming his position here, Treu worked in private practice in Sedalia, said Wells. Wells said Treu became a licensed attorney in September, but had worked at the firm as a clerk before then.
Treu lives in Cape Girardeau with his wife, Deanna.
The assistant attorney general before Moss, Jeff Dix, has served as the city's interim prosecutor. Dix will remain on as interim prosecutor to familiarize Treu with the job, Wells said.
