The Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has added its opposition to Amendment 7, Hancock II.
Chamber directors support the voters' right to a voice in being taxed, board chairman Ollie Miller said in a prepared statement after Friday's special meeting.
The chamber also supports the voter examination of the state's fiscal activities.
However, Miller said, because Amendment 7 goes far beyond these ideas and places itself above the state constitution, the chamber opposes this attempt to control state spending.
He added that in these times of increased government spending, the chamber would support examining a measure with clearly defined budget cuts and voter-approved tax increases.
