Three-term councilman Bill Cannon will take over the Chaffee mayor's seat for the next four years with his win over former mayor Bob Capshaw in Tuesday's election.

Cannon polled 476 votes to Capshaw's 306. Support for the two candidates was spread evenly among the precincts.

"I appreciate the confidence that people showed in me," Cannon said. "I intend to make myself available and lead the city forward."

"In life, you win some and you lose some," Capshaw said. "Chaffee is still the best town in Missouri. Now, it's back to my horses and cattle. Adios to politics."

In Chaffee's lone contested race for council member, Mike Hinkebein will represent Ward 2 for two years. He had 127 votes to Ronald Eichhorn's 85.

The unopposed Chaffee council candidates and their totals: Ron Davis, Ward 1, 140; Danny Finley, Ward 3, 156; and Tom Cunningham, Ward 4, 172.

The Chaffee park tax proposal for a 27-cent increase in the local property tax was defeated, 547-197.

One vote made a difference in Scott City as Ward 1 incumbent council member Brenda Moyers survived a challenge from Rodney Holloway, 135-134.

Incumbent council member Kenny R. Holder was defeated in Ward 2 by Cindy Williams, 81-64. Ward 3 incumbent Jerry Cummins was unopposed for another two-year term, receiving 133 votes. Incumbent Norman Brant retained his seat, beating Terry R. Johnston, 91-46.

In Oran, three of four incumbents on the board of aldermen were defeated in their bids for re-election.

The totals for the two-year terms were: Ward 1, Eddie Evans beat incumbent Tim Daniels, 31-12; Ward 2, Charles Urhahn beat incumbent Gil Roslen, 69-49; Ward 3, incumbent Richard Randolph retained his seat over Bill Anderson, 56-26; and Ward 4, Rusty Anderson beat incumbent Alfred Bonifield, 58-13.

Benton will have a new alderman as David Mack beat incumbent Clayton Hasenkamp in Ward 2, 56-39. Incumbent Mayor Joe Stuckey polled 149 votes and city collector Beverly Riley received 174 to retain their seats.

Incumbent Timothy McCoy retained his seat as a Morley alderman, beating Mike Mahurin, 35-10. Ward 2 alderman Andrew "Andy" P. Matz received 39 votes unopposed.

School board races

Incumbents retained seats in Scott County school board races for three-year terms.

In Scott City, Kevin Hillemann led all candidates with 459 votes. Tom Anderson also retained his seat with 439. Debbi Miller was a close third at 406 while Jim May polled 120 votes.

Chaffee school board president Bob Sullivan totaled 589 votes for his re-election. Board vice president Sharon Crowden had 560 votes while Alvin Vandeven garnered 323.

In the Oran school district, incumbents Mike Wheeler and John Bertrand led the vote with 331 and 295. Challengers Brenda Cook and Aleta Trankley had 156 and 117.

Incumbents Rita Milam and John Felter retained their seats on the Kelly School Board, gaining 404 and 339 votes. Challengers Michael Riley and David Felter had 326 and 268.

Incumbents Kay Boley Griffin and Gary Kesler were unopposed in the Scott County Central School District, picking up 190 and 172 votes, respectively.

In the Kelso C-7 School District at New Hamburg, Frank Glueck and Dorothy Dirnberger were unopposed, picking up 263 and 260 votes.
