Three men rescued a dog Sunday after it jumped from the Mississippi River Bridge at Cape Girardeau, pulling it into their boat after it plunged into the water.
The dog was unharmed and is being taken to the Cape Girardeau County Humane Shelter today, said Patrolman Rob Ross of the Cape Girardeau Police Department.
"The dog apparently got excited up on the bridge and didn't know what to do," Ross said the men told police. "It just got scared and jumped off."
Ross said the men were three workers from Lone Star who were out on the river doing some type of tests. "We didn't get their names," he said. The dog jumped at about 7:30 p.m.
"The dog was drifting down river pretty fast, and they said it took them about a mile to catch up to it," Ross said.
The dog had no identifying tags and is large and black and brown in color. Ross wasn't sure of its breed. The men reported the incident to Cape Girardeau police, and the dog was being kept overnight at the station.
"It was up walking around and playing," Ross said. "It seems to be in real good health."
