According to a probable-cause statement by New Madrid County Circuit Clerk's Office, the New Madrid County Sheriff's Department responded Wednesday night to Main Street in Canalou in reference to someone being stabbed.

Upon arrival, Zachary Cook was found lying on the ground suffering from what appeared to be stab wounds to the back and a cut wound to the stomach.

Cook was flown to a Cape Girardeau hospital for treatment, but before he was taken from the scene, he told officers Lafferty was the person who stabbed him.
