JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- During six straight election cycles in which an incumbent ran largely unopposed, the 157th House District garnered scant attention on Southeast Missouri's political landscape. This year, financial donors to political campaigns are taking notice.

As of June 30, the four Republicans in the Aug. 6 primary had raised nearly $76,000 in combined campaign cash dating to last summer -- a total far greater than any other state representative's race in the region.

Donna Lichtenegger of Jackson, a longtime GOP activist, had collected about 46 percent of the total dollars reported to date. Cape Girardeau County assistant prosecuting attorney Scott Lipke of Jackson claimed nearly 28 percent of the total. Donations to Jackson school board president Gerald Adams of Jackson and Cape Girardeau County Farm Bureau president Tom Sachse of Friedheim accounted for the remainder.

Meanwhile, Democrat Chuck Miller of Oriole had raised $16,320 so far during his campaign. Libertarian Timothy Doubledee of Jackson filed a statement saying he intends to neither spend nor receive more than $500 during the campaign.

Unopposed Democrat

Unopposed in the Democratic primary, Miller will be able to bank his contributions for use in the general election campaign. Unlike the GOP candidates, Miller has gotten strong early support from political action committees -- primarily labor and party organizations.

The winner of the Nov. 5 general election will replace term-limited state Rep. David Schwab, R-Jackson.

According to disclosure reports due Monday with the Missouri Ethics Commission, Lichtenegger raised the most money among the Republican hopefuls during the period of April 1 through June 30. Lichtenegger collected $7,230, including eight donations for the maximum of $300. She spent $6,068.25 and had $21,175.87 in the bank.

Lipke raised $4,704, spent $7,979.12 and had $10,026.73 left over. Only the Cape Girardeau Police Officer's Association gave him the maximum.

Adams brought in $4,159, spent $4,992.21 and had $1,056.90 remaining. He had three donations for the limit.

Sachse raised $1,120, all coming from donors giving $100 or less. He spent $1,882.32 and had $5,431.88 on hand.

Miller garnered $14,505 -- $2,075 from labor unions and $700 from party sources --during the latest reporting period. He had 11 maximum donations. Miller spent $2,788.12, leaving him with $13,281.88 in the bank.
