SIKESTON -- Campers and friends of Girl Scout Camp Latonka are invited to take part in homecoming festivities planned in celebration of the 40th anniversary Aug. 2-4.
Opened in summer 1951, Girl Scout Camp Latonka was the first camp of its kind between St. Louis and Memphis. Since its first summer, thousands of girls have enjoyed the camp.
To commemorate the anniversary, the Cotton Boll Area Girl Scout Council is hosting the Camp Latonka 40th Anniversary Homecoming Celebration. The weekend events include time for old camp friends to reminisce, a fish fry and an old-fashioned Latonka campfire by the lake.
"This weekend will be a very special time for Camp Latonka and for all the people who have enjoyed camp during this first 40 years," said Peggy J. Bess, executive director of the Cotton Boll Area Girl Scout Council. "We hope all of our former campers and friends of Camp Latonka will join us for this special homecoming celebration.
"Camp Latonka has been a very special place for so many people since it was first opened. We hope to celebrate our past, and also launch Latonka into its next 40 years."
Bess said those who would like additional information on the celebration can contact the council office in Sikeston at 471-1035.
The Cotton Boll Area Girl Scout Council Inc., is chartered by Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. The council, a United Way agency, serves a nine-county region in Southeast Missouri and operates Girl Scout Camp Latonka on Lake Wappapello.
