The fire started around 5:15 p.m. Thursday in a storage closet, principal Lynn Byrd said. About 25 students were in the building for tutoring, and one notified Byrd he smelled smoke. Firefighters responded within five minutes and had the fire under control in an hour and a half, he said.

Byrd is calling the situation an accident, but said he would be getting a report from a state fire marshall who investigated the incident Friday.

Byrd said the cafeteria, gym, and classrooms were not affected, and structural damage was held to a minimum around a storage closet.
