CAIRO, Ill. -- The 1244th Transportation Company should return from the Persian Gulf in June.

That's the latest word from Rep. Glenn Poshard, Democrat congressman from Southern Illinois.

"A letter from Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Sonny Montgomery indicates the 1244th, headquartered here, will return to the U.S. sometime in June," said Poshard this week. "This is the first official notice of when the reserve unit could expect to end their active service."

The 1244th was deployed to Operation Desert Shield on Sept. 20, 1990.

"I know the separation of families and friends has been difficult," said Poshard. "But, it appears their patience is about to be rewarded."

Poshard said he has been in regular contact with military officials concerning the company's deployment and expected date of return.

"This company includes people from throughout Southern Illinois," said Poshard. "During my briefings on Desert Storm, I specifically asked about the transportation companies. Secretary Cheney said their performances have played a big part in the overall success of the Far East operation.

"I know they are anxious to return home now," he added.

Neither the military nor the Veteran Affairs Committee an provide a more specific timetable or any other details at this time.

"Montgomery has assured me he will keep me informed about a timetable," said Poshard.
