CAIRO, Ill. -- Cairo High School students are receiving an unexpected early vacation this week. Students will be out of school the remainder of this week because of roof repair work at the high school building on Sycamore Street.
Starting Monday, high school students will attend classes at the Cairo Junior High building, 2403 Walnut.
School district officials decided to hold high school classes at the junior high after a Tuesday night meeting. The high school facility will be closed about a month for needed roof repairs.
"We looked at some other options," said Dr. Robert Isom, superintendent of Cairo schools. "We decided on the block program at the junior high facility."
High school students will enter the junior high facility through the back door and attend classes in a half dozen rooms made available. Some classes will also be held in portable classrooms in the gymnasium.
Junior high students will resume classes in their regular rooms, and enter the building from the front door.
Students had been attending classes while roof repair was being done. But a certain type of glue being used to install the new roof was blamed for some illnesses in the school, and it was decided to vacate the building, during the roof repair.
The roof should be replaced within 30 working days, said Isom.
