The Butler County presiding commissioner wants to try his hand at law enforcement.
Ed Strenfel announced in a news release that he intends to file for sheriff in the upcoming Republican primary.
"As presiding commissioner, I have seen firsthand how the problems in the sheriff's office have affected nearly every aspect of county government, and I have decided that I am going to run for sheriff because I feel that I have the unique experience and personal qualities to straighten things out," he said in the release.
Although he doesn't have any law enforcement experience, Strenfel said in his release that being a sheriff now is not "about kicking in doors and chasing crooks," but being a good leader and hiring good people.
Strenfel also said in the release that upon taking office he will begin negotiations with the city of Poplar Bluff to combine dispatching services and get the community more involved with policing efforts.
Strenfel has been presiding commissioner for the past five years and owns Strenfel's Muffler Shop and Ed's Huntin Stuff in Poplar Bluff.
