President George Bush edged out Bill Clinton in a mock election held last week at Cape Girardeau Central High School. President George Bush edged out Bill Clinton in a mock election held last week at Cape Girardeau Central High School.

In fact, the mock election showed nearly a Republican sweep in national and state races. Nearly 400 students and faculty members participated in the poll. However, only 21 percent indicated they were old enough to vote.

Bush captured 39 percent of the vote and Clinton earned 33 percent of the vote. Independent candidate H. Ross Perot earned 26 percent of the vote and Libertarian candidate Andre Marrou received 2 percent of the vote.

In the U.S. Senator race, Christopher Bond, incumbent Republican, received 74 percent of the vote with Democrat Geri Rothman-Serot capturing 23 percent of the vote. Libertarian Jeanne F. Bojarski earning 3 percent of the vote.

Republican candidate for William Webster won over Democrat Mel Carnahan, 61 percent to 39 percent.

Incumbent Republican Bill Emerson won over his Democratic challenger Thad Bullock in the race for U.S. Representative from Missouri's Eighth District. Emerson received 75 percent of the vote; Bullock received 25 percent.

In the 27th District Missouri Senate Race, Republican Peter Kinder won over Democrat Betty Hearnes. Kinder earned 63 percent of the vote; Hearnes earned 37 percent.

Republican Margaret Kelly won over her Democratic challenger for Missouri Lieutenant Governor Roger Wilson. Kelly had 55 percent of the vote and Wilson had 39 percent. Libertarian candidate Franklin Nugent captured 6 percent of the vote.

In the secretary of state contest, Republican John Hancock received 63 percent of the vote, out pacing Democrat Judith Moriarty, who had 31 percent. Libertarian Eric Harris had 5 percent of the vote.

In the single Democratic victory in this high school poll, Bob Holden received 45 percent of the vote to edge out Republican Gary Melton, who had 44 percent. Libertarian Janet Lewis received 11 percent.

Republican David Steelman won the race for attorney general over Democrat Jay Nixon. Steelman had 59 percent of the vote and Nixon had 34 percent. Libertarian Mitchell J. Moore earned 7 percent of the vote.
