The Cape Girardeau Police Department is reminding citizens that burning leaves on city streets is prohibited by law.
Doing so dries the oil from the asphalt and causes potholes. In addition, embers from the burned leaves can cause street sweepers to catch fire.
There are two acceptable ways to dispose of leaves. The city will pick up leaves from curbs in various neighborhoods from Nov. 11-Dec. 20. Residents also may take leaves to a compost holding area on at 1400 S. West End Blvd. from noon-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday.
Residents may burn their leaves on private property from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. each day. Leaves should be burned under close supervision when the wind is calm.
