The Cape Girardeau County Commission has issued a restricted burn order until further notice.

The Cape Girardeau County Commission has issued a restricted burn order until further notice.

According to commission order 10-C1, all county residents are to postpone open outdoor burning until the fire danger decreases. The ban includes field fires set for agricultural purposes and wood lot fires.

Commissioners signed the notice after county emergency management director Dick Knaup consulted with other fire districts. Officials are concerned the combination of high temperatures, lack of rain and the possibility of increasing winds poses a fire risk. The order does not specify consequences for violating the ban.

According to the latest federal drought information, the Cape Girardeau area was in a state of moderate to severe drought.

Commissioners Paul Koe-per and Jay Purcell signed the order. Presiding Commissioner Gerald Jones was not present at Monday's meeting.
