Buffalo man pleads guilty to threatening Bush

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A southwest Missouri man pleaded guilty Monday in federal court to threatening to kill President Bush. Darrel David Alford , 56, of Buffalo admitted he threatened on Aug. 4 to fly a bomb-laden model airplane into an arena or stadium where Bush would be speaking. He faces up to five years in federal prison without parole, plus a fine of up to $250,000. Alford talked about his plan in generic terms but never attempted to carry it out, said Don Ledford, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office. It was not clear when or where he planned to harm Bush, Ledford said. Bush spoke July 30 at an outdoor rally at Hammons Field in Springfield, about 30 miles south of Buffalo. Sentencing will be scheduled once a presentence investigation is completed, Ledford said.
