Nominations sought for preservation award
Old Town Cape's Design Committee is seeking nominations for its annual John Boardman Excellence in Rehabilitation Award for a commercial rehabilitation and the Judith Ann Crow Residential Historic Rehabilitation Award. The 2006 John Boardman award winner was Lang Jewelers, 126 N. Main St., and the 2006 Judith Ann Crow Residential Award winners were by Robert and Kaye Hamblin for residential rehabilitation at their 313 Themis St. residence. Contours Express helps provide school supplies
Contours Express at Town Plaza encouraged its members to donate school supplies for a drive that would help students in need. School employees were offered free enrollment with the donation of a bag of school supplies. Nine Cape Girardeau schools received a box of supplies with enough to supplement 50 students or fully equip 10 students with all the needed supplies.
Donations sought to help pay for funeral
Donations are being taken at Commerce Bank in Cape Gir-ardeau, c/o Myron Todd, to help pay for the funeral of Shirlene Winch, who died Nov. 28. She was the mother of Myron Todd.
Christmas contra dance will be Saturday
A Christmas contra dance will be held from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church, 101 N. Fountain St., Cape Girardeau. Book fair Saturday raises money for Zonta Club
Zonta Club of Cape Girardeau will hold a book fair from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday at Barnes and Noble in Cape Girardeau. The store will donate 10 percent of the purchase price of books, games and cafe items for patrons who wish to support Zonta. Events include gift-wrapping from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., a Christmas card making station from noon to 4 p.m.; story time for toddlers or preschoolers from 12:30 to 1 p.m.; author signing from 1 to 3 p.m.; story time for toddlers or preschoolers followed by a craft project and face painting from 3 to 3:30 p.m.; Pampered Chef demonstration from 4 to 5 p.m.; author Andy Leonard will sign his new book from 4 to 6 p.m.

Veterans to recognize Pearl Harbor day Friday
At least two veterans' organizations will recognize Friday as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day with small ceremonies. Jackson VFW Post 10495 will erect about 140 flags at the memorial to veterans of all wars in Brookside Park north of Jackson. The flags will fly from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. that day. American Legion Post 63 will hold a wreath ceremony at 10 a.m. in Riverfront Park. After a brief speech, members will toss the wreath into the Mississippi River and say a prayer.
Second person dies from collision near Delta
A second person has died following a head-on collision near Delta Monday afternoon. The Missouri State Highway Patrol said 23-year-old Jessica D. Cato, of Advance, Mo., was pronounced dead Tuesday afternoon at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Another driver involved in the crash, 24-year-old Erin Powell of Puxico, Mo., was pronounced dead Monday afternoon at Saint Francis Medical Center. The crash happened when Powell's car crossed the center line into the path of Cato's vehicle. Another car, driven by 25-year-old Stephanie D. Bess of Advance, struck Cato's car in the rear. Bess was taken by ambulance to Saint Francis and treated for minor injuries. An infant, Powell's son Waylon, was also taken to Saint Francis, where he was treated for moderate injuries sustained in the crash.
Dexter man arrested on child molestation charge
DEXTER, Mo. -- A Dexter man has been arrested and charged with child molestation. According to Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney Briney Welborn, 59-year-old Doyle Pettigrew was arrested Tuesday and charged with the class B felony of first-degree child molestation. According to the complaint filed with the court in July, Pettigrew had sexual contact with a victim who, at the time, was younger than 14 years old.
First Friday Coffee offers Old Town Cape overview
The Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce First Friday Coffee this week will provide business leaders from the community an overview of the work of Old Town Cape. Doors open for a continental breakfast of juice, coffee and sweet rolls at 7 a.m. Friday, with the program beginning at 7:40 a.m. Old Town Cape is the organization responsible for promoting historic preservation and business promotion in much of the area between West End Boulevard and the Mississippi River. Friday's coffee will be sponsored by Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield and Kelly Services.
St. Louis author to sign books Saturday in Cape
St. Louis author and former Cape Girardeau and Jackson resident P.A. "Andy" Leonard will be at Barnes and Noble for a book signing from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday.
