APEC leaders forge deal on climate change
SYDNEY, Australia -- Pacific Rim leaders agreed Saturday to curb global warming by im­proving energy use and expanding forests, laying out a plan they hope will influence future climate change talks. President Bush, Russian President Vladimir Putin, China's Hu Jintao and leaders of other Asia-Pacific economies adopted the program at an annual summit.
Bombing at barracks in Algeria kills at least 28
ALGIERS, Algeria -- A car bombing killed 28 coast guard officers in Algeria on Saturday, just days after a blast ripped through a crowd waiting for the president. Although there was no claim of responsibility in either attack, al-Qaida's North African affiliate has carried out a spate of recent bombings.
U.N. chief urges Gadhafi to help Darfur peace
SIRTE, Libya -- The U.N. secretary-general urged Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi on Saturday to play a leadership role in bringing all of Darfur's rebel groups to a new round of peace talks with the Sudanese government. Ban Ki-moon met with Gadhafi in his hometown of Sirte two days after the U.N. chief and Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir announced the talks would be held in Libya starting Oct. 27.
Iran rejects court's ruling over 1983 bombing
TEHRAN, Iran -- Iran on Saturday rejected a U.S. federal judge's ruling that the Islamic Republic must pay $2.65 billion to the families of the 241 U.S. service members killed in the 1983 bombing of the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut. U.S. District Judge Royce C. Lamberth described his ruling on Friday as the largest-ever such judgment by an American court against another country.
