Eastbound Highway 34/72 has been closed between the Jackson Medical Center and Old Toll Road and shifted to the newly widened pavement on the south side, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation. Westbound traffic will remain in the same lane for about a week as work proceeds installing new permanent traffic signals. Once the new signal posts and arms are installed, westbound traffic will also be shifted to the new asphalt pavement on the south side. The traffic shift will allow the contractor to finish the pavement repairs, construct the remaining concrete driveways, finish the curb and gutter, and start placing the new asphalt widening on the north side. The work is part of phase two of the Highway 34/72 project, which includes widening and resurfacing as well as adding signals, curb and gutter and storm sewer. Phase two of the project is from one mile west of the Highway 24 intersection to 2.2 miles west of Highway 25. Construction on phase two of the project is expected to be completed this summer. Additionally, two miles south of Scott City on Interstate 55, northbound lanes will continue to be reduced to one lane throughout the day, following an accident Thursday.
