Civil War Roundtable meets today

The Civil War Roundtable will meet at 2 p.m. today at Hanover Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau. The program will be "Gettysburg," a film from the famous Civil War park, donated by club member Jerry Hampton. Discussion on the upcoming second annual Fort D Days is on the agenda.

Cape police say one DWIsuspect flees, one fights

Two Cape Girardeau men were in Cape Girardeau County Jail Saturday following driving while intoxicated incidents Friday night in which one fled from police and another assaulted a police officer. At around 10:25 p.m. police attempted to pull over 52-year-old Ricky N. May, 839 Morgan Oak St., in the area of Good Hope and Pacific streets after he made an illegal U-turn. According to police reports, the man initiated a short chase on his motorcycle before it tipped over. He then fled on foot for a short distance before being apprehended by police. May was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, careless and imprudent driving, driving with a suspended license and leaving the scene of an accident. He was being held in the Cape Girardeau County Jail Saturday on those charges and on a failure to appear warrant. The second incident occurred around 12:45 a.m. when police responded to a call of leaving the scene of an accident at East Cape Rock Drive and Rand Street. Police were able to track down the suspect, 32-year-old Jerry Cook, at his home at 114 E. Cape Rock Drive. According to police reports Cook struggled when police tried to arrest him and a Taser was used on Cook. When police were placing him in their vehicle, Cook kicked an officer in the face, causing a minor injury. Cook was in Cape Girardeau County jail Saturday night on charges of assaulting a law enforcement officer, driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident and resisting arrest.

Dobbins to be featured on KRCU's Going Public

Southeast Missouri State University president Dr. Ken Dobbins will discuss the River Campus, the research park project and other issues involving the school on today's "Going Public" radio show. Also on the show, Mitch Robinson will discuss Pancake Day and Michael Lund will explain why he donated an unpublished manuscript of a William Carlos Williams poem to the university. In the River Tales segment, Mike Shain of KFVS12 reminisces about growing up in Sikeston, Mo., during World War II. The show will be broadcast at 3 p.m. on KRCU, 90.9 FM; and KSEF, 88.9 FM.

Journalism boot camp set for April 21

Southeast Missouri State University will hold a "Journalism Boot Camp" on April 21. The seminar, sponsored by the communication department at Southeast, will include instruction on news values, news writing, and press law and ethics. It is open to high school and college students. Admission is free. Lunch will be available at a cost of $8, organizers said. Sherrie Farabee, a reporting instructor at Southeast, will lead the seminar. For more information, call 651-5180.
