More construction is set to begin in Cape Girardeau County on May 23, weather permitting, when crews begin to replace three bridges along Highway 34.

The projects are part of the Safe and Sound Bridge Improvement Program that will improve more 800 bridges in Missouri by the end of 2013.

The construction on Highway 34 will continue through August, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation.

Bridges being replaced are over Whitewater Overflow, Byrd Creek and Whitewater River. Highway 34, from Route HH to Highway 72, will remain closed until the project is completed.

Southeast Regional Field Engineer Andy Meyer said he understands the closures will be an inconvenience to motorists, but said due to the infrastructure's age the projects are necessary.

"The three bridges to be replaced were constructed in the 1930s and they have suffered severe wear and tear over the years from ever-increasing traffic loads and salt application," he said in a MoDOT news release. "It's time to get this done."

Motorists traveling the area during the months of construction are encouraged to use caution and consider using detour routes along Route OO and Route Z.

Work to replace the Ramsey Creek bridge in Cape Girardeau County began Tuesday and has closed southbound Kingshighway, from Silver Springs Road to Route 74 west, until its completion. The project is scheduled to be complete mid-July.

Signs and warning devices that are in place to notify motorists of the project will remain for the duration of the closure.
