DEXTER, Mo. -- A 9-year-old Dexter boy was airlifted to a Cape Girardeau hospital late Sunday morning after being struck by a vehicle in a gravel driveway. According to Dexter police, Austin Oakes was on his knees playing in the gravel when a Dexter woman, Patricia Ann McKinney, 52, was backing into the drive and hit the boy. Austin Oakes was first taken by ambulance to the Dexter Municipal Airport where he was met by a helicopter and airlifted to Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. He was later transferred to Children's Hospital in St. Louis where he had surgery for a leg injury. He was expected to make a full recovery.
