A $100,000 bond was set Tuesday for a man who attempted to hide a gram of crack cocaine in his mouth during an arrest in Cape Girardeau, police said.

Frederick L. Langevin, 38, of 321 Albert St., was charged felony possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor attempted tampering with evidence.

A Southeast Missouri Task Force officer was following a vehicle in which Langevin was a passenger after witnessing a suspected drug deal at Jax's Bar in Delta, according to a probable cause statement filed in the case.

The officer contacted Cape Girardeau police, who pulled the vehicle over around 3:30 p.m. at Kingshighway and Silver Springs Road, police spokesman Jason Selzer said.

Before taking Langevin into custody, the officer saw the defendant hide a baggie in his mouth, according to the statement. An officer was able to retrieve the bag, which was found to hold about one gram of cocaine base.

Langevin later admitted to officers that he sold seven grams of crack cocaine to another person at the bar, the statement read.

The defendant has a history of felony convictions, including two for domestic assault in Cape Girardeau County, three for thefts in Cape Girardeau and Scott counties, and a forgery conviction in Illinois.
